Frequently Asked Questions

Printing

The word Giclée is French for “sprayed ink”. Today, the term is used to describe a sophisticated inkjet printmaking process, which creates the highest quality fine art reproductions.

Giclée printing offers extra-fine image resolution, helping retain a higher degree of detail from the original fine art or photographic images.

As a certified Fine Art Trade Guild approved printer, prints undergo annual testing by a UKAS-approved laboratory. Key requirements for this quality standard are the lightfastness of a print, ensuring that it scores a value of 6 or more on the Blue Wool Scale in all areas.

Only original and official UV (pigment-based) inks are used, ensuring each print faithfully reproduces the tone, temperature, and colour of the original image. UV inks contain enhanced light stabilisers; offering far more durability than dye-based inks; protecting the vibrancy of your prints for over 100 years in ideal conditions.

A lot of research and development has gone into the various aspects and materials that make up a Giclée print.

The archival nature of the print varies according to the type of inks used, as well as the archival properties of your chosen paper, selected and the conditions in which the print is displayed or stored.

Current scientific opinion is that our recommended papers and Giclée printing process will produce a print that lasts between 100 and 200 years in good condition.

Yes, prints can be mounted to a wide range of different substrates / materials including: wood, acrylic, dibond, gatorboard, foam board, and foamex. For a bespoke order including different sizes and mediums, contact Nilla through the Contact Form or email nillasphotos@gmail.com for your quote.

Canvases

Custom canvas prints are produced using a 12-colour Giclée print process for a museum-quality finish, before being hand-stretched over a wooden frame, which is milled with a curved profile to help minimise contact with the face of the canvas, preventing impression marks and surface cracking.

Each corner is then folded tightly over each edge and fixed with staples to the frame. Finger-jointed canvas frames are used to create corner tension and help resist warping. For larger sizes, wooden wedges are added to each corner, ensuring the canvas surface remains taut and allowing for easy re-stretching in future.

Standard canvas and metallic canvas (UK only) materials are made from a blend of cotton and polyester. The eco canvas substrates are made of 100% polyester, with the stretched eco canvas, framed eco canvas, and rolled eco canvas, all using polyester sourced from recycled plastic bottles./p>

Stretcher bars made from durable European knotless pine are used, except for the stretched eco canvas and framed eco canvas, which are stretched over a lightweight frame made from 100% recycled materials.

All of the picture frames used for framed canvas prints are made from sustainably sourced wood.

Only neo pigment inks or eco solvent inks are used, with neo pigment inks being the most widely used. Original and official UV (neo pigment) inks are used to ensure that each print faithfully reproduces the tone, temperature, and colour of the original image. These water-based inks contain enhanced light stabilisers, offering far more durability than dye-based inks and protecting the vibrancy of your prints for over 100 years in ideal conditions.

The archival nature of the print varies according to the type of ink used as well as the archival properties of your chosen paper and the conditions in which the print is displayed or stored. Current scientific reports suggest that our recommended papers and Giclée printing process will produce a print that lasts between 100 and 200 years in optimal conditions.

Please note that any print located in direct sunlight is still likely to fade over time.

Drop-shipping

The global print network that Nilla’s Photography uses are specialists in printing, packing, and shipping personalised made-on-demand works direct to you.

Every order passes through a quality assurance process before being securely packed for domestic or international shipping.

Works are manufactured in different locations around the world. This means delivery costs and times are lowered by shipping the order from a location most local to you.

Regardless of where the work is manufactured, all shipments use suitable and secure packaging and are sent using a trusted courier.

Packaging

The global print network that Nilla’s Photography uses are specialists in printing, packing, and shipping personalised work(s) direct to you.

Unframed work(s) are hand-rolled in protective tissue paper and then shipped in extra-thick cardboard tubes. A delivery note is included with each package.

All framed and canvas works are wrapped in a protective sleeve with individual plastic or cardboard guards added to each corner. Additional cardboard is secured over the work’s surface to minimise the risk of breakages or transit damage. Each work is then shipped in a heavy-duty cardboard box.

Packaging standards have been refined many times, over many years, and it is now extremely rare for breakages or damage to occur. On those rare occasions when incidents happen, we strive to ensure that your collection and replacement are organised immediately and shipped back out on a priority service without any fuss.

Please note that in addition to the above, large framed and canvas works are also bubble-wrapped for added protection. We’re actively exploring ways to reduce the use of bubble wrap within our supply chain and, where practicable, use bubble wrap that can be recycled at special collection points.
